Digital Social Work: Ethical Challenges and Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence for Vulnerable Populations

Introduction: Digital social work is in a transitional stage due to the integration of artificial intelligence. While the incorporation of this technology offers process optimization benefits, it also necessitates a consideration of the ethical risks involved in its application with vulnerable populations. Methodology: This article was based on a narrative documentary review. The search was intentionally focused on publications from the last ten years, while also taking into account the theoretical background of ethical principles in social work. Results: The results demonstrated a real risk of fostering exclusion, as algorithms can amplify discriminatory biases present in the training data. Essentially, the functioning of these systems is difficult to analyze because they are unclear and difficult to comprehend. This study argues that artificial intelligence must operate within a framework of deep ethics, ensuring that human oversight remains a constant factor. Conclusions: The key advantage lies in consolidating tools that are grounded in the foundational principles of social work, such as social justice, autonomy, and human dignity. The future demands a technological development that transforms vulnerable contexts by leveraging the skills of professionals
